Second chances can change lives and strengthen Tennessee’s manufacturing workforce. A recent Tooling U-SME article highlights how UT CIS’s Tennessee Manufacturing Extension Partnership Program, TMEP, is helping connect justice-involved individuals with industry-recognized manufacturing training and credentials. Through this partnership, participants completed coursework in areas like CNC machining, robotics, safety procedures, and quality control, preparing them for the SME Certified Manufacturing Associate credential. The pilot cohort of eight learners successfully completed all 25 courses and earned the nationally recognized certification, and the program has since expanded across Middle, East, and West Tennessee. For TMEP, this work is about more than workforce development. It is about helping manufacturers access untapped talent, supporting individuals as they prepare for life beyond incarceration, and building stronger communities across Tennessee.
